Press Release: Rescue of 111 Hens Launches Campaign Against Entire Egg Industry
8th February 2010
New national grassroots animal rights group, Animal Freedom Aotearoa (AFA), last week rescued one hundred and eleven layer hens from a factory farm in the single largest rescue to date in Aotearoa/New Zealand.
AFA member Jasmine Gray says, "While there are millions of chickens suffering in this country we feel compelled to do what we can to help free them from their tortured existence".
This rescue is a first step in AFA's campaign seeking the end of industrialised egg production within Aotearoa/New Zealand.
"While this initial rescue focused on battery hens, our campaign and future actions will seek to expose the cruelty inherent in the whole layer hen industry, including free range and barn raised production?" says Ms Gray.
Following on from this action, at 12 noon today AFA will be demonstrating at the offices of the Egg Producers Federation in Newmarket to highlight the plight of all layer hens.
