Press Release: Feral Cat Attack on Pigs - Yeah Right
09 April 2010
Following the appearance of NZ Pork Representatives on Close UP last night members of Animal Freedom Aotearoa (AFA) decided to investigate the conditions on NZ pig farms further. Selwyn Dobinson, NZ Pork Industry veterinary consultant, who appeared on Close Up yesterday evening, claimed that cannibalism was unlikely to be the cause of injury, death and dismemberment of piglets, rather it was more likely that the documented damage was caused by feral cats. Last night AFA activists entered a South Auckland pig farm and discovered evidence of so called 'Feral cat' attacks when they came across a piglet who?s legs had been torn off, and it's insides completely eaten out of it's body.
Jasmine Gray, member of Animal Freedom Aotearoa says, "it's almost laughable that a pig specialist could seriously suggest that injury such as we documented last night, and the footage provided by Open Rescue, could be the result of feral cat attacks."
Ms Gray continues "cannibalism within the pork industry is a well documented fact, and perhaps Mr. Dobinson's opinion is skewed by his pork industry sponsors."
Along with the footage obtained last night AFA also investigated four other pig farms in Levin, Hunterville, Kumeu and Pokeno. The footage, taken from 2009 to 2010 shows sows in stalls where they cannot turn around, mothers confined to stalls unable to nurse their young and piglets housed in filthy over crowded pens.
Animal Freedom Aotearoa are holding a 'Freedom for Pigs' action on Vulcan Lane, Auckland CBD, from 8am through to 1pm today, where they will be displaying a half eaten piglet, a victim of cannibalism from the NZ Pork industry.
